It best for her and her life

It is safe to say that the best thing that can happen in the
world is to give life to another human being. In this paper I want to examine
if abortion is morally wrong or not and whether women should have the right to
choose the future for their baby. According to Don Marquis he argues that what
makes killing any being (human or not) morally questionable is that death
entails the eradication of that being’s future. He forms this opinion based on
the fact that the loss of one’s life is one of the greatest losses one can
suffer. His reasoning for this is because by taking away one’s life also means
that you are depriving them of their future, activities, and enjoyments in life
which leads to why he believes that killing is morally wrong. Although I agree
with some of the points Marquis makes about taking away someone’s life and how
it could be considered morally wrong, I want to argue that the fate of that
life should be in the mother’s hands and she should be able to choose whether
she wants the baby or not. If she believes what she is doing is best for her
and her life then it is not morally wrong for her to make that choice.

The first point that I want to argue is that women have a
moral right to decide what they want to do with their bodies. If you take away
their right to decide what they want to do with their body then you’re causing
a form of oppression by putting women in a different category than men. If
women are not allowed to abort an unwanted fetus then they are deprived of this
right. Since a fetus is in the woman’s body then she should have the right to
decide to abort that fetus or not. Marquis makes points about the future of the
fetus and how you deprive them of that life by killing it but what if a woman
gets raped by a man and doesn’t want an unknown mans baby? This situation is
already causing emotional stress to the women and could potentially affect her
future based on the actions of that man. The baby in this case is something
that was forced upon her and not something she wanted. It is her moral
obligation to do what is best for her and not the fetus in this case. Pregnancy
has a huge impact on the women involved. A pregnancy for a woman is probably
one of the most determinative aspects of her life. It disrupts their bodies,
education, and enjoyments in life. The man that raped her is taking away the
same experiences of life that marquis argues would take away by killing a
fetus. So which one is morally wrong or right if they both deprive someone of

The next point I want to make is about freedom and equality
for women. They say that if women are not allowed to have an abortion then she
is not only forced to continue the pregnancy but also to look over the child
for years to come unless she can find someone else to take care of it. If women
don’t have the right to decide what to do with their own fetus then there is no
sense of freedom or equality for them. Men obviously don’t get pregnant so they
are not restricted in any way during the pregnancy. No woman can call herself
free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother.

Women need the right to abortion to have full rights over their own bodies.

This includes the right to decide whether or not to carry a fetus to birth. If
women do not have this right then they do not have the same moral status as

The last point I want to bring up is how pregnancy can cause
women financial instability. A pregnancy is already hard enough on women, but
an unexpected one is even worse. If a woman becomes pregnant when she didn’t
plan to be, it might cause a financial problem because she does not have the
money to support the child. This causes mothers to lack the resources to cover
the high costs of pregnancy, birth, and childrearing, especially if they do not
have insurance. This could potentially lead to a bad life for the child. If the
mother does not have the resources to take care of her baby then that could
lead to the baby’s death, which the mother would then be held liable for. What
if the mother knew when she got pregnant that she wouldn’t be able to take care
of the baby financially and wanted an abortion but since Marquis thinks it is
morally wrong, we passed a law that bans abortions. So what would be considered
worse, the abortion or the lack or resources to take care of the child and
letting it suffer and possibly die? In my opinion the abortion seems like the
most logically choice.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that women should have the
right to decide what they want to do with their bodies or not. If she believes
what she is doing is best for her and her life then it is not morally wrong for
her to make that choice. Although I agree with Marquis on some of the points he
makes about abortion being morally wrong and how it affects that person’s
future, but the same can be said for the women that have to make that decision
to keep the baby or not. The moral issues surrounding abortion will continue to
spark a never-ending argument about what is right and what is wrong. I do not
think that abortion is murder but a moral dilemma affecting not only the life
of the fetus but the life of the mother as well.
