As we move into a new era, the Internet has revolutionized society in terms of economy, education, technology, and more. In the early days of internet presence in Malaysia, its ability is limited compared to today. Internet users in this age can already do almost everything and do even just sitting at home facing the computer screen equipped with access to the Internet. In fact, it has become an important requirement for some individuals.
The development of Internet in Malaysia started in 1983 by Dr Mohamed Awang-Lah when it comes to his idea of connecting Malaysia to the outside world via the Internet in the laboratory of the University of Malaya Library. In 1984, he was inducted into the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS). The Government has developed MIMOS, and this has opened up opportunities for the IT literate at that time to use the Internet. In 1989, local universities have been using computer networks Malaysia (RANGKOM) that connects the library facilities, also introduced by Dr Mohamed Awang-Lah.
It was later expanded to support the private sector, but only put pressure on the email, and e-forums as a first step in the Internet even though it has the ability to communicate and share information using the internet. Then, Joint Advanced Integrated Network (JARING) was launched in 1991. JARING main objective is to expand the national communications network in an integrated and comprehensive. The project was later inducted into the RANGKOM JARING project. MIMOS manage the JARING network as a key project in the Ninth Malaysia Plan-6. JARING is connected to all academic institutions, government agencies, and private companies in Malaysia.
It is also connected to the internet. To meet the needs of users in Malaysia, in 1996, Telekom Malaysia TM Net has introduced a second Internet line in 2000 and later, other companies also started to introduce Internet services such as Maxis Communications Berhad and DiGi Telecommunications Berhad. According to statistics, the number of internet users increased by 15. 1% of the total population in 2000, 37. 9% in 2005, and 64. 6% in 2010. It is expected to increase two-fold in 2012. We are not sure how, or which way the Internet technology will be developed. However, we can not underestimate the importance.
Internet is growing, with no limits. ROLES OF INTERNET IN TODAY’S SOCIETY In the economy of our country, the Internet plays an important role in the community of a country. It connects people to exchange ideas and thoughts, daily activities such as electronic banking, without having taken the trouble to line up to pay bills, all located at the tip of your finger. The process of money transfer can be done with an electronic banking system that guarantees a safe and fast service. Just by simply surfing the Internet, trading activities can be done without having to physically meet with the seller.
People now can express ideas and opinions in their respective forum sites and encourage people to be more rational, competitive and productive. Entertainment site also provides services to listen to free radio to make it as an alternative without having to download the song. Some websites such as YouTube provide a service to watch video from all over the world. News within and outside the country can also be distributed to the public more aware of the current situation. Software such as Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger is used to chat on the Internet without boundaries. It helps us in connecting to other individuals from all over the world.
Students who study abroad can reduce costs of communicating with our loved ones by these facilities. In fact, the Skype software enables a person to chat either by phone, such as audio, or video for free. Social sites are connecting people with communities in cyberspace. Internet users are increasing every year at a very steady. Technological advances are helping people find new business opportunities or to facilitate basic services like health and education, as well as creating opportunities for high-speed data networks, new multimedia applications more friendly, the exchange of information, and technology convergence.
In addition, a teleconference communication facilities, and long distance telecommunications combines audio and video, to the benefit of distance learning, but it also can reduce costs by effectively and efficiently. In agriculture, access the Internet quickly and easily, helping farmers and rural traders by providing the latest market price information, information about the types of genes and seeds are good for plants or animals, and weather forecasts.
It has also been used by scientists and surgeons around the world to consult about the studies performed, surgical procedures, and at the same time the operation is supervised by a surgeon from another country. This reduces the cost and time to send individual to other countries to receive training or providing services. They can share their skills, knowledge, and experience without having to be physically present. In general, the Internet connects the world together; help solve problems, and became the starting point of the modern world revolution.
