I had the pleasure of teaching Nicole Kwan from 9th grade to the present in Mandarin at Schurr High School.  From the first day of class, Nicole impressed me with her ability to comprehend difficult passages and assignments, sensitivity to the nuances within the language, and her passion for learning- both in and out of the classroom.  Nicole is a hard working student, and she has my highest recommendation.Nicole is talented at picking up the language, which is not easy since one must study, memorize, and use vocabulary and grammatical structures.  Like learning any new language, it takes time and effort, but Nicole overcomes this and continues to be determined to learn.  She has produced extraordinary projects such as the Qingming Festival (Students research and create a PowerPoint on a traditional Chinese festival.) and Iceland Itinerary (Students design a three to five day itinerary to a location of their choice.)  In these projects, she satisfactorily used Chinese characters and grammar along with visual components to make them more interesting and with a new dimension.  Also, when called upon for speaking tests to read passages in the textbook, she almost always spoke clearly and with correct intonation.  This can be difficult to handle since tones are linked to each syllable’s meaning, so changing the tone can change the meaning.  But Nicole managed to learn the correct tones and do well in those tests.  Outside of the classroom, Nicole remains dedicated to Chinese.  She completes her assignments skillfully and usually with full points.  She is an insightful, sensitive, and deeply self-aware individual driven to explore Mandarin and a deeper understanding of the Chinese culture.Throughout the years, Nicole was on-task and mannerly in class, and she always respected her peers.  Her caring nature and personality allow her to work well with others, as she always listens to others’ opinions even when they differ from her own.  However, she is also an independent worker who will quietly complete her work and rarely disrupt the class.  Her introspective nature makes her capable of making her own decisions.  Nicole demonstrates this openness and empathy for the opinions, feelings, and perspectives of others while keeping her own individualism, making her outstanding as a student of Chinese and Schurr in general.I am certain that Nicole is going to continue to do great and positive things in her future.  I highly recommend her for admission to your college.  She is talented, intuitive, and focused in her pursuits.  Nicole consistently seeks perfection by asking for constructive feedback or taking her time to complete work, which is a rare and impressive quality in a high school student.  Nicole was a pleasure to have in class.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at [email protected]
