Anne Bradstreet: Thoughts Towards of Her Husband Essay

To me, the poem “A letter to her husband, Absent upon Public Employment” is a reflection of the poet’s own self. I think that, it is so sweet and forlorn because she misses her husband so much. However, from the poem’s title I guess that, her husband went for public employment and she wrote a letter for taking a holiday from job. So it is a common scenario of her mind and it is reality. Hence, from my point of view, it is only and main theme of this poem that she misses her husband like the same way other women might miss their husbands, since i notice this everywhere from starting to end. My head, my heart, mine eyes, my life, nay, more, My joy, my magazine of earthly store,” From my perspective, the poet, Anne Bradstreet misses her husband a lot. That is why she addresses different parts of her bodies like head, heart, eyes. On the other hand, she loves her husband a lot more than his life, she says in phrase “my life, nay, more,”. I think, here she uses repetition of “my” word in her lines because with her head, heart, eyes and life she misses him extremely. However, her life turns into full of joy from missing him when he comes and by “my magazine” she refers resourcefulness of her mind.

Khadija 2 “My sun is gone so far in’s zodiac,” From my point of view, the poet overlooks her husband that is why she addresses her husband by a series of metaphors, the main one being the sun. By the phrase, “My Sun”, there poet concentrate ones how much she misses him, since he gone so far for public employment. Then, she relates the sun with “zodiac” and in lines 7 and 8 a new pattern of imagery emerges and this new image reveals by “zodiac” word. I think, by “zodiac” here the poet develops a metaphysical self-satisfaction which is significant metaphor.

However, it refers astronomical and scientific knowledge of the physical world with poet and her husband’s indefinable relationship. So i believe, there she portrays her extensive imagination in these two lines. For example, “zodiac” means the path of the sun and planets through the heavens and there she continues her sun metaphor into the future. Hence, we all know that, heaven is known as the place where we will go if we do good work. So, the poet imagines her husband went there which are out of her catch and touch. “Whom whilst I ‘joyed, nor storms, nor frost I felt,

His warmth such frigid colds did cause to melt. ” Now, I can say that distance is not matter for the poet because she feels warmth in absent of her husband. While her husband was in front of her, she felt same thing of him. So, only letter can memorize her sweet past since letter-writing is superior art of conversation than other writing as the Author Huger Jervey says. From his writings “distance how far” is really not issue for the poet. However, he also says, this types of letter may contain fullness of warmth and wild softness.

I believe that, Anne Bradstreet wrote same pattern poem to her husband which addresses by her spoken word seem in bad taste and chilled in general and sex appeal in particular. The author also claims, sometime “nature sentiment” could be able to wet into sentimentally both of letter writer and readers. Same thing happened in Lord Ogilvie life like he wrote a letter to his wife while they were far reaching from each other, for these reason he told her to write him letter every day. For instance, he wrote, “I ask pardon for troubling you . . . . . . and for to pray you to write me every day, and to appoint when I shall come back. ” Consequently, i believe that, the poet misses her husband a lot like the same way other men might miss their wife too, it is an example of that situation. (Jervey 354). Khadija 3 “Return, return, sweet Sol, from Capricorn,” Here she again uses “sweet sol” metaphor by addressing her husband. “Capricorn,” is the tenth sign of the zodiac, which rises in winter. So, the astrological sign Capricorn actually rises in winter and it is her present situation.

On the other hand, she continues to address her sun metaphor into the future. When he will return, the season will be summer that is why she told about “Cancer”. Here, “Cancer” means the fourth sign of the zodiac, which rises in summer. So, it is another sign of astronomical and by these she wants: “I wish my Sun may never set, but burn/ Within the Cancer of my glowing breast,”. Actually, she finds the short winter days from returning “sweet sol” but it is ironically long and tedious.

In “True living pictures of their father’s face” why she talks about fathers face instead of her? I believe that its only reason is she misses her husband a lot that is why she sees his picture inside of children. That is why, it is a tactile image which appeals to the sense of touch. However, the poet addresses her husband by a series of metaphors for example “My Sun”, “sweet sol” and then “my dearest guest”. To me, by this type of metaphors she wants to welcome her husband who never can go anywhere. For this reason she says- “where ever, ever stay, and go not thence,”.

Actually she overlooks her husband that is why she wants to bind her husband. line 3: “If two be one, as surely thou and I,” last line: “I here, thou there, yet but both one. ” Here, “If two be one” is an example of paradox that refers a logical contradiction which is true because from Holy Quran, husband and wife made for each other and one cannot complete without other. Then, “Bone of thy bone” is of course a reference to Bible, in verse 23, where, Adam calls Eve ‘bone of my bone’ and ‘flesh of my flesh’.

This is often said us how husband and wife inter-related with each other. In real fact, it has a much greater significance for every Christian. I can give an example, Saint Matthew says, when they get marry, “So they are no longer two but one. Therefore, don’t let anyone separate what God has joined together. ” (St Matthew 19; 6). And in keeping with that, the poet starts and ends the poem with references to two being one. In consequent, these are both references to an old tradition which is marriage.

However, as Huger says, some writers do not write like they talk and some do so. So, whose do so, they have courageous spirit to write and they always draws natural scenario of their writing. On the other hand, whose do not so, they do not have any connection of individuality within writing. Consequently, the poet is very careful to draws natural scenario of his writing. Dr. Johnson maintained same thing which the poet does and Dr said that “a man’s soul lies naked in his letters,”. Actually, the poet says in her poem whatever comes through in her mind. Finally, how the poet misses her husband a lot like other people, she portrays it very carefully and it touches my mind very well.
